Several times he went on personal alert, ready to take his family into the extensive blast and fallout shelter in the backyard, just as he had when Kennedy backed Khrushchev down. The Cold War seemed to have ended without a nuclear exchange, but Kevin knew his history.

Quintessential Jerry D. Young, sometimes called the "Dean" of PAW fiction. A classic tale with mystery, suspense, clouds of threat, and--romance. Young, like many PAW writers is a hopeless romantic.
A good story of doing the best you can with what you have. In this case he had it all, thanks to the wise preps of his grandfather who had been thru the hard times. Some good information.
I usually enjoy reading Mr. Young's books, but not this one.
The main character seems to be an idiot when it comes to keeping a secret. He opens his grandfather's safe, in front of the housekeeper's daughter, whom he barely knows, revealing the gold. "He trusts her." So naive. Maybe she'll keep the secret, maybe she won't, but why risk it. Smart people are secretive about what they have, with good reason (like not getting scammed, robbed, or killed).
Some sayings "Three people can keep a secret, if two of them are dead." and
"A secret known by two people is no longer a secret." -)

would have preferred if the book description WAS a book description, and not just a bio of the writer.
this is a great read, i was entertained! The twists and turns kept me reading.
This book was written in a way that built up the Characters and gave life to the story. It was filled with the hard truth in times of hardship. The true American's will rise and meet the challenges and the people that take will try to keep taking.
